Owner of Peoria-area fitness centers plans to open a new location in Pekin next year – Pekin Daily Times

A fourth Titan Fitness location will spare gym members living in Pekin a commute to Peoria or Washington for their workouts.

“We have a fair number of people coming from Pekin to go to my North Peoria facility up by Pioneer Park,” Titan Fitness owner Chris Cupi said. “I think it says a lot about our brand.”

The Pekin City Council recently approved a tax increment financing redevelopment agreement, by which Cupi will receive $175,000 in Court Street TIF funds to assist with the construction of a Titan Fitness facility at the northeast corner of Griffin Avenue and Vandever Avenue.

The new fitness center will be in a 12,000 square-foot building that will contain a 4,400-square-foot, upper-level mezzanine. It will feature 24-hour access for members, child care, a full smoothie bar, group fitness classes, live-streamed classes, personal training, small group training and space for high intensity interval training.

“I’ve lived in Pekin for years,” said Cupi. “I live just right outside of town now, and I’ve always wanted to have a gym (in Pekin). With one or two gyms going out (of business), I thought this would be a great time to build my own facility.”

Cupi estimated that construction of the building and a parking lot, combined with the purchase of fitness equipment, will cost about $2 million. He will be reimbursed through real estate tax refunds over a period of about 17 years. He expects construction to begin in May and hopes to open in early 2023.

“(The city of Pekin) has been phenomenal … everyone from (Pekin Mayor Mark Luft) on down to the folks working at (Pekin City Hall),” Cupi stated. “It’s been a great experience. I think they know my passion and what I want to accomplish.”

The facility’s location in a high-traffic area will potentially attract new patrons. But Cupi said his main goal, as a proud Pekin-area resident, is civic improvement through promotion of a healthy community lifestyle.

“We attract people for life,” he added. “We’re not one of these clubs where people come in and then you don’t see them again. We really want our members to use the place. That’s what it’s there for.”

Titan Fitness currently has about 2,500 members and facilities in Rantoul, Washington and Peoria. Cupi said the amenities at the new Pekin location will mirror what is available at the Peoria facility. More information is available at titanfitness24.com.
