  • Strength for Women, led by Nancy Migliozzi from Center Path Yoga — $5 drop-in fee. Every Wednesday starting May from 8:30-9:15 p.m. at Main Street Community Center

The exercise classes at MSCC, along with most in-person activities at the center, were canceled for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first indoor class to resume was Tai Chi in September 2021.

“Our Walking Club did meet during the pandemic because it was outside, and they walked with masks for a long time,” Main Street Executive Director Sara Berkbigler said. “Lynn Dean came to us with an idea to start a yoga class after the first of the year and that started in February.

“We had been talking to the Edwardsville YMCA for some time about trying to get a class here and they designed the Functional Fitness class for us. That is taught by Mary Tebbe from the YMCA.”

More recently, the center had two other people offer to teach classes designed for seniors.

“Dr. Jill Oertle came to us about the iMOVE and Groove Class, so while Functional Fitness meets on the first and third Wednesdays, Jill will fill that time slot for the second and fourth Tuesdays,” Berkbigler said.

“Strength training for women will be taught by Center Path Yoga. That will be starting in May as well.”

The iMOVE and Groove Class incorporates exercises designed to improve your strength and balance, while moving to your favorite music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. It can be enjoyed by people of all fitness and mobility levels.

The yoga class is gentle and restorative, and beginners are welcome. You must bring your own mat, and if you use blocks and a blanket, please bring them as well.

Strength for Women, meanwhile, offers beginner strength training using resistance bands and bodyweight. There will also be balance practice as well as stretching and flexibility.

The class uses a simple trigger point therapy to relieve pain. Most exercises are performed standing or seated.

The Walking Club, meanwhile, meets every Tuesday and started its schedule for this month on April 5 at Schon Park in Glen Carbon.

The remaining walks for this month are April 12 at Watershed Nature Center in Edwardsville, April 19 at Joe Glik Park in Edwardsville and April 26 at Drost Park in Maryville.

The walks start at 9:30 a.m. The club will not meet when there is extremely cold weather or when there is precipitation.

Berkbigler emphasized the health benefits of the exercise classes for seniors, as well as the variety of classes available.

“There are so many classes and there is something for everybody. Some are free and some are fee-based, but the fees are very reasonable,” Berkbigler said.

“We have classes in the morning, the afternoon and the evening. Hopefully we have something that can fit anyone’s schedule. Anybody can join the classes or the Walking Club, but they’re designed with seniors in mind to accommodate their levels of ability, flexibility and strength.”

In addition to the health benefits, Berkbigler noted that the classes offer a chance to socialize and meet new friends, especially after social interaction was limited during the past two years of the pandemic.

“With the Walking Club, for instance, a lot of these people have become good friends,” Berkbigler said. “They have lunch afterward or get together to go to a movie. It’s a great opportunity to meet other people.”

Berkbigler added that Main Street has resumed its schedule of day trips, which had also been canceled due to the pandemic.

“We were waiting on the Cardinals as to when their schedule would start, but now that they are playing, we have day trips every Wednesday from April through December,” Berkbigler said.

The schedule includes a Cardinals game against the New York Mets on Wednesday, April 27; a day in Illinois Amish Country on Wednesday, May 18 and a St. Louis Gardens and Galleries tour on Wednesday, June 15, led by St. Louis tour guide and master gardener Linda Koenig.
