Chonky, 30 pound Michigan cat seeking family committed to his weight loss – MLive.com

WESTLAND, MI – A big, furry boy needs a big commitment from his future adopters. Mister, a 12-year old Domestic Short Hair orange and white cat, weights a whopping 30 pounds and is up for adoption at the Berman Center for Animal Care in Westland through the Michigan Humane Society.

Mister could stand to lose about 15 pounds, but we’re told he’s ready to commit to his weight-loss program as soon as he’s taken to his new forever home, which includes playing more and eating less.

Mister is described by shelter staff as sweet, affectionate, vocal and funny. They say he loves to walk around and rub everything he comes across. Mister also likes when someone pets him and he really loves butt area rubs. But don’t pick him up. He’s hard to lift and he will let you know it.

Mister is currently not able to scratch or groom himself, but that should come over time as he sheds some pounds. Along with feeding your pet consistent meals and not leaving food out for them 24/7, Anna Chrisman from the Michigan Humane Society offers this advice to help Mister in his weight-loss journey.

“Make sure to only feed the recommended amount of food for your pet based on their age, weight and overall health. Your veterinarian can make those recommendations.”

Chrisman also says don’t give your pets human food. “Not only can they cause weight gain for your pet, but certain items also can be very toxic to our companion animals. If you want to provide treats, make sure they are designed specifically for your animal.”

Chrisman says Mister and all cats need plenty of play time which can include playing with interactive toys like laser pointers and feather wands. She also recommends using puzzle feeders and having perches and cat trees to help your cats stay active.

Meantime, Mister made a best friend at the shelter in Hobbs. Hobbs had a brother who passed away and he had attached himself to Mister while grieving. Someone just adopted Hobbs over the weekend. Mister seems to be good with other cats as he and Hobbs hung out all the time and enjoyed cuddling and grooming each other. They also enjoyed wrestling, despite Mister’s size advantage.

Mister is at the Berman Center for Animal Care in Westland which can be reached at 866-648-6263. His pet ID is: 49192676.

Chrisman also recommends whomever adopts a cat to always have a yearly check-up with your veterinarian. She says just like people, obesity in pets can lead to a number of other health problems. Regular vet visits will help make sure your cat’s health is monitored and on track.
